How to Build Your First WhatsApp Chatbot Flow in ZazzyAgent

Updated
View as Markdown

Your first chatbot does not need to be complicated.

A simple menu with three choices can teach you almost everything you need to know about Flow Builder:

Trigger → Message → Choice → Branch → Action

This guide walks through a simple WhatsApp customer-support flow.

What we'll build

The customer sends:

help

ZazzyAgent replies:

Hi! How can we help?

Then shows:

Track Order

Products

Talk to Support

Each option takes the customer somewhere different.

Before you start

You need:

  • Connected WhatsApp account

  • Flow Builder access

  • A WhatsApp automation setup

  • A clear purpose for the flow

If you haven't connected WhatsApp yet, see How to Get WhatsApp API and Connect WhatsApp to ZazzyAgent.

Step 1: Create a flow

Open Flow Builder.

Create a new flow.

Give it a useful name:

Main Customer Menu

Avoid:

Flow 1

A clear name matters once you have multiple automations.

Step 2: Configure the trigger

Open the Start Bot Flow configuration.

Set the keyword:

help

Choose the appropriate matching mode.

For a simple example, an exact keyword match is easy to understand.

The current Flow Builder trigger configuration supports exact keyword matching and broader string matching.

Step 3: Add the welcome message

Add a text message:

Hi! Welcome to our support team. How can we help you?

Keep the first message simple.

Step 4: Add Quick Replies

Add:

Track Order

Products

Talk to Support

See Quick Replies in ZazzyAgent: Complete Guide.

Step 5: Create the Track Order branch

Connect:

Track Order

to a new message:

Sure. Please provide your order number.

You can then add User Input if you want the order number collected and saved.

See ZazzyAgent User Input: Build Forms Inside WhatsApp.

Step 6: Create the Products branch

Connect:

Products

to:

Great! What would you like to see?

You can then send:

  • Product categories

  • Images

  • Catalog content

  • Product recommendations

  • Another menu

Step 7: Create the Support branch

Connect:

Talk to Support

to:

I'll connect you with our support team.

You can then route the conversation to the appropriate human-support workflow.

See ZazzyAgent Shared Inbox: Manage Customers and Human Handoffs.

Step 8: Save the flow

Save the complete flow.

The current Flow Builder documentation specifically emphasizes saving the flow after configuration.

Step 9: Test it

Send:

help

from your test WhatsApp account.

You should receive:

Hi! Welcome to our support team. How can we help you?

Then the three options.

Test each one.

Test Track Order

Tap:

Track Order

Confirm that the order-information path starts.

Test Products

Tap:

Products

Confirm that the product path starts.

Test Support

Tap:

Talk to Support

Confirm that the support path works.

Why this simple flow matters

You've now used:

  • Trigger

  • Text

  • Quick Replies

  • Branching

  • User Input

  • Human support

Those are the foundations of much more advanced automations.

Add a condition

You could extend the flow.

For example:

Customer Type = VIP

→ VIP support

Otherwise:

→ Standard support

See How to Use Conditions in ZazzyAgent Flow Builder.

Add a label

You could label customers who choose:

Products

with:

Product Interest

This can later be used for segmentation.

See How to Use Labels in ZazzyAgent.

Add a sequence

After a customer requests product information:

Product Information

→ Start Sales Follow-up

See How to Start a WhatsApp Sequence From a ZazzyAgent AI Agent for sequence concepts.

Add AI later

You can also place AI into a structured automation.

For example:

Products

→ AI Product Assistant

The AI can understand natural-language questions rather than forcing the customer through menus.

Add an API later

Suppose the customer chooses:

Track Order

You could call an API to retrieve the live order status.

See HTTP API in ZazzyAgent: Complete Guide.

Your first flow architecture

Customer types "help"
          ↓
Welcome Message
          ↓
Quick Replies
   ↓ ↓ ↓
Order Products Support
 ↓ ↓ ↓
Input Products Human
           /AI Agent

Common first-flow mistakes

Too many options

Start with three to five meaningful options.

No clear next step

Every choice should lead somewhere.

Trying to build everything at once

Build the basic flow first.

Not testing each branch

A flow isn't finished until every route works.

What to build next

Once your first flow works, add one advanced feature at a time:

User Input

→ collect customer data

Custom Fields

→ save customer information

Conditions

→ branch based on data

Labels

→ classify customers

Sequences

→ follow up

AI

→ understand natural language

APIs

→ retrieve live information

That progression is easier to manage than trying to build a 100-step chatbot on your first attempt.
