You can use ZazzyAgent to automate conversations with customers who message your Instagram account.

Before you can create an Instagram AI Agent or chatbot, your Instagram account needs to be connected correctly through Meta.

For beginners, the most important thing to understand is this:

Your Instagram account connects through Meta, and your Instagram Professional account needs to be properly linked to a Facebook Page.

Once the connection is working, ZazzyAgent can receive Instagram DMs and use your configured automation, AI Agents and shared inbox.

What you need before connecting Instagram

Prepare these first:

  • An Instagram Professional account

  • A Facebook account with access to the relevant business assets

  • A Facebook Page connected to your Instagram account

  • Access to the Meta business assets associated with the account

Instagram messaging automation is intended for supported Professional accounts connected through Meta. The current connection documentation identifies Business/Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page as the required setup.

Step 1: Check your Instagram account type

Open Instagram.

Go to:

Profile → Settings and privacy → Account type and tools

Check that your account is a supported Professional account.

Depending on your Instagram setup, this may be:

  • Business

  • Creator

A personal Instagram account is not the setup you should use for ZazzyAgent Instagram automation.

Step 2: Connect Instagram to a Facebook Page

Your Instagram account should be connected to the appropriate Facebook Page.

This relationship is important because Meta uses the Page/business relationship when authorizing Instagram messaging access.

If your Instagram account is not linked to a Page, it may not appear correctly during the ZazzyAgent connection process.

Step 3: Check the connection inside Instagram

Open Instagram.

Go to your professional account settings and check the account's connected Facebook/Page information.

Make sure you are linking the correct Facebook Page.

If you have several Pages, don't assume the right one is automatically selected.

Step 4: Open ZazzyAgent

Log in to ZazzyAgent.

Open the area for connecting your Meta accounts.

Select:

Instagram

Step 5: Continue with Facebook

The Meta authorization process uses your Facebook login.

Make sure you're logged into the Facebook account that has access to the correct Page and Instagram assets.

Click the Facebook login/authorization option.

The current connection flow uses Facebook login to authorize Instagram access.

Step 6: Select your permissions

Meta may ask which Pages, businesses and Instagram accounts you want to give access to.

Select the assets you want ZazzyAgent to manage.

For a business with only one Instagram account, this is usually straightforward.

For an agency or business managing multiple accounts, carefully check the selections.

Step 7: Approve the requested access

Review the permissions Meta shows.

Approve the requested access required for Instagram messaging and account management.

Do not accidentally select a different business or Instagram account.

Step 8: Return to ZazzyAgent

After the Meta authorization completes, you should be returned to ZazzyAgent.

Your available Instagram account should appear in the connection area.

Select the appropriate account and enable it where required.

Step 9: Test Instagram messaging

Do not immediately build a complicated AI Agent.

First test the connection itself.

Create a simple agent using ZazzyAgent flow builder.

From another Instagram account, send a DM to your business account.

Check whether the message reaches ZazzyAgent.

If the message appears in the dashboard, your basic Instagram messaging connection is working.

Step 10: Check Live Chat

Open the Instagram conversation in ZazzyAgent's shared/live inbox.

You should be able to see the customer conversation there once the connection is active.

The current platform connection documentation supports managing Instagram DMs from the dashboard after the account has been connected and enabled.

If your Instagram account doesn't appear

Check these first:

Your Instagram account is Professional

Make sure it isn't still a personal account.

Instagram is connected to a Facebook Page

The correct Page must be associated with the Instagram account.

You're using the correct Facebook account

The Facebook account used for authorization needs access to the relevant assets.

You selected the correct assets during Meta authorization

Businesses with multiple Pages or Instagram accounts need to be especially careful here.

If Instagram connects but DMs don't arrive

The connection may be authorized while Instagram messaging access is still blocked.

Check the Instagram Connected Tools setting.

This is one of the most important Instagram troubleshooting steps.

Open the Instagram mobile app and go to:

Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools

Look for:

Allow access to messages

Make sure it is enabled.

The current troubleshooting guidance also identifies Instagram connected-tool message access as a key setting when messages aren't being captured.

If you manage several Instagram accounts

Be careful when authorizing Meta.

You may have:

  • Instagram Account A

  • Instagram Account B

  • Facebook Page A

  • Facebook Page B

Make sure the relationships are correct.

The wrong selection can make it appear that Instagram is connected while you're actually working with another account.

What happens after Instagram is connected?

You can start using:

Instagram DMs

→ AI Agents

→ Bot Flows

→ Shared Inbox

→ Customer data

→ Lead qualification

→ Human handoff

→ Other supported automation

Your next step should usually be creating a focused AI Agent rather than building dozens of unrelated automations.

What should an Instagram AI Agent do?

Start with one clear purpose.

Examples:

Answer common Instagram enquiries.

Qualify new leads.

Book consultations.

Answer product questions.

Route customers to a human.

You can create more specialized agents later.

Instagram connection checklist

Before building your AI Agent:

  • [ ] Instagram is a Professional account

  • [ ] Instagram is linked to the correct Facebook Page

  • [ ] Correct Facebook account is being used for authorization

  • [ ] Correct Instagram account is selected

  • [ ] Meta permissions are approved

  • [ ] Instagram account is enabled in ZazzyAgent

  • [ ] Connected Tools → Allow access to messages is enabled

  • [ ] Test DM reaches ZazzyAgent

Once these are working, you're ready to build your Instagram AI Agent.
